Shenandoah is a multi-generational story of two Virginia families-the MacAlpines and Ballantines-in the fi rst half of the 20th Century. Through the lenses of heredity and environment, the novel examines how human evolution slowly progresses by the combination, recombination and reappearance of traits. Randolph MacAlpine, scion of these two families, personifi es this process of change. Within this seemingly random variation, there is an order and pattern beneath the surface of the human struggles of war, adversity, the drive to procreate and ultimately to transcend. Above all, the human soul is ever at the center of this evolutionary unfolding.

For this read, Miskimon, a 7th generation Virginian, takes us on a seductive journey through the South. The multi-layered plot moves like the Shenandoah, sweeping up believable characters: their joys, miseries and affectations. He knows the anatomy of intimate relationships like a surgeon knows human gut, bone and sinew. The page turner lingers in the eddies of his clear and profound reverence for nature and takes us from the Civil War to WWII to the 20th Century with an interplay of death, depth and human superficiality. Shenandoah A Novel of Redemption Robert Miskimon 9781477128725 Books Reviews
"Randolph MacAlpine seeks a completely new direction for his life, but his choices are determined by genetics as much as by willpower in this unique saga of Virginia families in the first half of the 20th Century."
-- Publishers Weekly, December 2012.
Two families can easily join together with the same goals and future. Shenandoah is a novel of the early 20th Century over the generations as the bond between the MacAlpine and Ballantine families develops and changes----and then shatters with devastating repercussions. We see the genetic evolution of a family and the adaptability of souls struggling with survival. An intriguing twist on the family drama, Shenandoah is reading worth considering and is highly recommended.
----Midwest Book Review
If you ever wondered what happened to the South, and in particular to male Southerners, other than those donning white sheets and swilling beer while night-riding in pickup trucks with shotgun racks in the back window, this is the book for you. A cross between "Tom Brown's School Days" and almost anything written by Bill Faulkner, Truman Capote or Tenn Williams, "Shenandoah - A novel of redemption," is yet another small treasure from Robert Miskimon. This latest work is a virtual travel log of Southern gentility psyche, personal biography, and remnant snippets of a writer's notebook, all loosely bound by the meandering flight of a guilt ridden boy in search of an education, a purpose in life, and ultimately forgiveness for ill-perceived and wholly unfounded failures. Redemption for Robert, I believe, will come in his very next work, his best ever I would guess, if he chooses not to first cut off his ear. Free now, I hope, of personal tragedy and more common weaknesses and pains, he is certainly, finally left alone with a well honed craft and a bottomless well from which to draw.
I have been a fan of Robert Miskimon for a decade now, ever since reading his novel, "What Death Can Touch." Now, a decade later, in "Shenandoah - A Tale of Redemption" I see the generational making of the writer and man in a fuller moon and better understand his long struggle with loss, guilt, and helplessness in the face of unthinkable tragedy. For me, and more importantly for him, this most recent effort should finally lay that matter to rest. The angst with the woman in the tale is obviously quite another tale. Anyone having read either the 1st of these 2 works should find comfort and some solace in this most recent effort; Robert most of all, if only in the writing of it. I say to him now, "Lay down your burden, brother, and once again take up your pen; you have a keen eye and a poet's heart which will help you to accomplish the task you were sent here to do."
